Campaign Updates

Thanks to all our supporters, we did it! We raised the money necessary to mount Matsukaze without any of the ensemble or crew having to go out-of-pocket for direct show expenses. We came close, but didn’t quite make either of our stretch goals. We’ll roll that money over into the next phase of the fundraising campaign.

We haven’t completed this year’s financials yet, but it looks like YTG might finish a season (slightly) in the black for the first time since the pandemic started. Part of that was due to a less ambitious production schedule than our 2020/2021 season, but the biggest part of that was your generous support on Phase 1 of this campaign.

YTG’s overall finances are still in the red, however, so on to Phase 2!

We discovered early this week that despite the fact that we calculated our projector’s throw, we didn’t take into account certain structural elements in the way of the beam. In order to preserve the vision of the design team, we decided to buy a second projector. We did this as cheaply as possible, and bought a used unit, but the second projector and necessary accessories cost an unexpected 40,000 yen more.

今週初め、プロジェクターの投射量を計算したにもかかわらず、梁の邪魔になるある構造要素を考慮していないことが判明しました。そこで、デザインチームのビジョンを維持するために、2台目のプロジェクターを購入することにしました。なるべく安く、中古で購入したのですが、2台目のプロジェクターと必要なアクセサリーが予想外に4万円ほど高くついてしまいました。

We have adjusted the total on the website and the good news is that we’re still above 100% of our total budget raised! Yay! The bad news is that we’re now 36,000 yen away from our first stretch goal of ensemble member travel bursaries. Boo!

WOW! Not only did we hit our goal for the show, but we exceeded it! We’re now less than 10,000 yen away from hitting our first stretch goal: providing some expense subsidies in the form of an honourarium to our ensemble members! Another 25,000 yen past that will provide food and drinks to the cast after the show (provided it is safe to consume them).

ワオ! この公演の資金調達の目標額を達成しただけでなく、それを上回ることができました。最初のストレッチゴールである、アンサンブルメンバーへの謝礼金まで、あと1万円を切りました! さらに25,000円で、公演後のキャストへの食事と飲み物を提供します。

These may seem frivolous, but there have been too many times in the past when we haven’t been able to show even this bit of tiny appreciation to our volunteer teams. (Everyone who “works” for YTG is a volunteer, donating their time for the community and to be part of the art-making process.)

If we’re able to raise money beyond those two stretch goals, we will be putting it towards Phase 2 of our fundraising plan.

A little show update: We had a great rehearsal today, nailing down a couple of very difficult scenes. We have plenty of lighting notes for Xander, our lighting designer. Anna Murray, our sound designer and composer is hard at work, as is Duncan Whom, video artist and man-about-town who is making our video backgrounds. We’re starting to see and hear some really interesting things emerge from their collaboration!

Things are really starting to get busy as we move towards Production Week. If all goes well, our screens go in tomorrow so that we can start rehearsing with Duncan’s projections. This Saturday, we hang and focus the lights in a late-night session after the studio clears out. We plan to buy wood and build the tree unit on Monday.

オープニング・ナイトが近づくにつれ、本当に忙しくなってきました。うまくいけば、明日にはスクリーンが入り、Duncanのプロジェクションのリハーサルを始めることができる。今週の土曜日は、スタジオが片付いた後の深夜のセッションで、照明の吊り込みとフォーカシングを行います。月曜日には木材を買って、ツリーユニットを作る予定です。

I’ve just ordered the Polaroid film today. With luck it will have arrived before Monday’s rehearsal so we can practice with it.

今日、ポラロイドフィルムを注文したところだ。運が良ければ、月曜日のリハーサルまでに届くので、それで練習ができる。
