Since 1900, YTG has been making theatre in Yokohama, Japan, and now you can help us to grow and expand our activities into the next century. What kind of stuff do we do? All kinds. Here are some trailers from recent shows:

We also sometimes film other theatre events in the Kanto area and make them available to our donors. Recently, YTG members participated in various capacities in the Tokyo International Players’ production of The Tragedy of Macbeth. We also filmed the show, and, by special arrangement with them, are able to offer it as one of the videos available to our backers.

Formerly a club,  YTG reorganized in the 21st century as a non-profit and has been granted NPO Hojin status in Japan (as of May 2012). Our mission is to serve our community through modern, multilingual Theatre and Theatre education. The current goal is to build an ensemble of semi-professional theatre artists who aim to become a professional group of Theatre makers and educators.

Our philosophy is that theatre is limitless! We want our workshops and shows to be open for everybody, no matter of your nationality, gender, age, or occupation. You can participate as an actor, volunteer, supporter, or by just enjoying the final result as a audience member.

YTG’s biggest challenges are a rather conservative theatre culture in Japan, and finding companies and individuals who will support our unusually extended show creation processes. We create most of our shows in rehearsal; we don’t just grab a script off a shelf, rehearse for three to six weeks and throw it on stage. We take as long as we need to build each new world from which a show will emerge. Therefore, without the effort of all our volunteers, members, collaborators, and friends, who are willing to offer their free time without receiving any money, we would not be able to keep on doing what we all love: making impactful theatre art.

But running YTG in the way we think creates the best theatre takes money. Aside from the show expenses, there are ongoing operating costs. Things like printer toner and servicing, electricity bills, PC parts, software costs, meals for interns or media people, transportation expenses, event admission costs, registration fees, translation, a backup service, postage, bank service charges, phone bills, web hosting, and annual taxes (we pay the government 70,000 yen per year to remain registered as a non-profit organization), just to name a few.

These expenses are not glamorous like the expenses on a show, but they are absolutely critical to keeping YTG running.

In addition, as YTG expands the scope of our activities and matures as an NPO, these expenses are only going to increase. We want to, for instance, start buying some of our own lighting equipment so we can make better use of the inexpensive but flexible venues that we like to use. We also need to upgrade our sound and video equipment in order to properly record our shows and show them to festival juries both in Japan and abroad.

So if you think that our work is not for the dogs and want to help us to keep on going, than pledge what you can. Every little bit is needed and we are grateful for every support we can get! Of course, we can give a little back in return. The first 2000 Yen gets you access to a YTG video of your choice. Each 1000 Yen after that (up to a maximum of 6000 yen) grants another video. For 15,000 yen, you get all the currently available videos and a show credit for all production over the 12 months following your donation.

“single camera” means that the show was shot with just a single camera and no edits.

“multiple camera” means that the show was shot with multiple cameras and has been edited to include a variety of shots.

“workshop” means that this show was a workshop rather than a fully spit-and-polished production. Like a first draft. Expect production values to be lower.
